Today is Menstrual Hygiene Day!
Menstrual Hygiene Day is a global advocacy platform for promoting good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) for all women and girls. It serves to break the silence, raise awareness and change negative social norms surrounding MHM, and engage decision-makers to increase the political priority and catalyse action for MHM, at global, national and local levels.
This year’s motto for Menstrual Hygiene Day is “MH Day 2020 is happening. Period.”

You might also wonder what is Fit for School doing to improve conditions for menstrual hygiene?
Fit for School’s contribution towards improving conditions for menstrual hygiene is through its development of a MHM in Schools concept. The concept is modular, culturally adaptable and consists of a set of primary and secondary interventions needed for MHM in schools, which were developed based on the WHO-UNICEF JMP programme service ladders for monitoring WASH in schools in the Sustainable Development Goals.
These interventions range from providing primary services such as female-friendly sanitation facilities, access to supplies for MHM and information on MHM, to secondary services such as capacity-building for teachers and school health personnel, peer-to-peer education and waste management among others.

Let’s create a world in which every woman and girl is empowered to manage her menstruation safely, hygienically, with confidence and without shame, where no woman or girl is limited by something as natural and normal as her period!
