The School Health Department (SHD) of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) implements the Fit for School Program in Cambodia, with technical assistance from the GIZ Regional FIT Program. MoEYS coordinates closely with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ministry for Rural Development (MRD) for the program steering.
In 2011, program implementation started in 10 model schools in 5 provinces, covering almost 8,000 students. In 2019, Fit for School activities have been adopted by numerous more schools and have been integrated into the school support programming by several other development partners, among them the World Food Programme, UNICEF, World Vision, BORDA ESC, the Maddox-Jolie-Pitt Foundation. Combined, the program reaches 190,000 students in 566 schools in 12 provinces through these collaborative efforts.
To understand more about how to bring WASH in Schools to scale, MoEYS selected Kampot as a province for learning about the necessary steps in 2015. Education officials in the Provincial Office of Education were already familiar with the program, since two of the original model schools are located in Kampot. Currently, about 62% (193 out of 306) of primary schools in Kampot implement daily group hygiene activities after the efforts of the provincial and district offices of education to improve school management for healthier school environments. The experiences from scaling-up WASH in Schools in Kampot province have been documented and informed the development of a training package for other provincial and district officers in Cambodia. The SHD together with the GIZ Regional FIT Program currently trains more province and district officials to support their schools in improving WinS.
